Booker Prize Nominees Are Released
The administrators of the Man Booker Prize released its longlist for this yearâs award on Tuesday, a list of 13 novels that was notable for its diversity. The Booker is Britainâs most prestigious literary award, given to an author in the former British Commonwealth, Ireland or Zimbabwe for what the judges consider the finest novel of the year.
Robert MacFarlane, the chair of judges, said in a statement that the books on the list ârange from the traditional to the experimental, from the first century AD to the present day, from 100 pages to 1,000 and from Shanghai to Hendon.â
The books are âFive Star Billionaireâ by Tash Aw (Fourth Estate); âWe Need New Namesâ by NoViolet Bulawayo (Chatto & Windus); âThe Luminariesâ by Eleanor Catton (Granta); âHarvestâ by Jim Crace (Picador); âThe Marrying of Chani Kaufmanâ by Eve Harris (Sandstone Press); âThe Killsâ by Richard House (Picador); âThe Lowlandâ by Jhumpa Lahiri (Bloomsbury); âUnexplodedâ by Alison MacLeod (Hamish Hamilton); âTransAtlanticâ by Colum McCann (Bloomsbury); âAlmost Englishâ by Charlotte Mendelson (Mantle); âA Tale for the Time Beingâ by Ruth Ozeki (Canongate); âThe Spinning Heartâ by Donal Ryan (Doubleday Ireland); and âThe Testament of Maryâ by Colm TóibÃn (Viking).
The winner will be named on Oct. 15.
